Natural tips on getting pregnant

Scientific studies have shown that certain vitamins and minerals contribute to conception.

Women should take folic acid (400 micrograms per day), before, during and after conception. Men should take zinc supplements and increase their intake of vitamin D to improve sperm quality.

Experts also advise having a varied diet containing plenty of fruit and vegetables, bread, potatoes, rice and cereals, milk, meat and fish.

We recommend that you arrange an appointment with your doctor to discuss your personal nutrition levels.

Being overweight can cause your period to become irregular thus affecting conception. If possible, eat small meals five times a day, increasing the iron intake, and avoid excess/added sugars and processed foods; however it is important to consult your doctor before doing so.

For both men and women it is recommended to reduce the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes. Smoking has been linked to infertility and early menopause in women, and sperm problems in men, it also reduces the success of fertility treatments.

Regular moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day will help keep you in good health and help weight control. Exercise also reduces stress and increases endorphin levels, which causes you to feel good.

Stress does not cause infertility, but excessive anxiety can sometimes alter the menstrual cycle.

Try to reduce stress levels and take time to relax while trying to conceive.

Aromatherapy is a gentle therapy that uses natural essential oils (concentrated from plant substances and distilled from the roots, seeds, bark and leaves) to promote health, and emotional and physical well-being. The oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin through massage. It has been shown that specific aromatherapy oils help in regulating the menstrual cycle and promote a healthy reproductive system.

Aromatherapy can also help with relaxation, reducing stress levels and counter acting depression.

Another tip for men is that they should avoid wearing tight underwear, cycling, excessively hot baths or saunas, and placing a laptop on your lap during the days you're trying to conceive.

These precautions respond to the need of the testes to be slightly colder than the rest of the body for optimal sperm production.

Moreover, jobs that require sitting for long periods of time, such as truck driving long distance, can affect sperm quality.

Exposure to environmental chemicals such as paints or pesticides are also believed to be associated with lack of quality sperm.

If this is something you are exposed to, we recommend that you take relevant steps to try and avoid over exposure.

Acupuncture

Research suggests that acupuncture (an ancient Chinese technique that can help increase blood circulation in the uterus and relax the muscle tissue) may increase your chances of successful conception.

Acupuncture can also be useful to treat cases of male infertility. Some studies show that periodic acupuncture treatments significantly increase the quantity, quality and motility of sperm.
